D’Gëlla Fra in Cyberspace

Luxembourg - D'Gëlla Fra, or the Golden Lady, has extended her world tour but this time into the virtual world.

On Feburary 11, 2011, the first 3D rendering of the Golden Lady was accepted into Google Earth. Now anyone using Google Earth or Google Maps can visit the Gëlla Fra. In Google Earth, the visitor can also click on the model and find out more information about Luxembourg's most famous ambassador.

The 3D model is the brain-child of KarlPierceDesign.com, a new design firm here in the Grand Duchy. "I went to see the Golden Lady at her exhibit in Bascharage with my family. It was quite a moving experience to be so close to the Lady who welcomed me to Luxembourg over six years ago." said Karl Pierce, the designer of the model.

"After learning more about her diplomatic mission to Shanghai and her very difficult past, I wanted to do what I could to help her. I had been using Google Sketchup, Google's 3D drawing tool, for my Set Design work in Theatre, and I knew it could be used to draw buildings for Google Earth. So I thought it would be a fitting tribute to help the Golden Lady into virtual world, where everyone could see her."

The new medium did present some challenges. "Working on a model for Google Earth is different from my regular modeling work. The models must have a very small file size so they can be downloaded easily. This means that I couldn't recreate the rich details of the Lady herself. It's more like an impression than a photo, but I think she is happy with the result, she recently added me as a friend on FaceBook." explained Karl in a nod to the Golden Lady's other web presence.

"It has been such a fantastic experience working on Google Earth that I have decided to include it as one of the core areas of my design firm. I'm now looking for new projects here in Luxembourg. I hope that increasing the country's virtual tourism will increase Luxembourg's real tourism."
